X-RAY crystallography, the object of which is the study of-crystalline substances by means of X-rays, is a new branch of science which originated in 1912, when von Laue carried out his celebrated experiments on the diffraction of X-rays by crystalline gJ.'atings. It has developed especially under the influence of the Braggs, father and son, and of their chool, followed rapidly by many other research workers.
